Erased Movie Review | |
| Arash Amel's plot is a hodgepodge of threadbare motifs, liberally cut and pasted from every thriller you've seen. Michael Posner-Globe and Mail "Erased" isn't actively bad, it's just doing something that has been done a whole lot better before. Tom Long-Detroit News 'Frances Ha' is the most purely enjoyable and sweet-tempered movie the exceptionally talented Baumbach has made his nearly two decades as a director. Glenn Kenny-MSN Movies 'Erased' is an entertaining enough action outing with plenty of well-done elements to recommend it. Kate Erbland-MSN Movies It promises little, and half-heartedly delivers. Stephen Whitty-Newark Star-Ledger Eckhart and Liberato may not act as if they're in Retread-land - Olga Kurylenko, meanwhile, as a CIA handler, barely acts at all - but this "Erased" is eminently forgettable. Robert Abele-Los Angeles Times Eckhart's cold blue eyes, sturdy, unsuspecting frame and his chiselled, pointy Doberman features stir a sense of murky mystery that fit the role particularly well and add extra juice to some rather overcooked scenes. Katherine Monk-Canada.com [Erased] turns out in the end to be a solid VOD release, with Eckhart lifting his leading role out of anonymity and claiming it with a driven if not outstanding performance. Mark Zhuravsky-The Playlist ...a fast paced thriller with high tension that never lets up, with award-quality music by Jeff Danna and fine performances by Eckhart, Liberato, and Kurylenko... Tony Medley-Tolucan Times Characters we genuinely care about are lost in a movie that almost dissipates before our very eyes. Bilge Ebiri-Vulture A cold and lifeless feature that offers a couple of good performances yet it fails to tell any sort of an intriguing story. JimmyO-JoBlo's Movie Emporium The combination of Arash Amel's convoluted but involving screenplay, Philipp Stoelzl's sure-handed helming, and some brisk editing make Erased one of the more intelligent and gripping international thrillers of recent years. David Noh-Film Journal International Although Erased goes through the motions of its various spy games efficiently enough, you never completely forget that you're watching an imitation of far better movies. Ethan Alter-Television Without Pity Everything about Erased feels generic, from the dialogue to the plot twists to the action sequences. Josh Bell-Las Vegas Weekly If you're a spy thriller fan or love the perpetually underrated (and in need of a better agent) Eckhart, you may be surprised. Everyone else has a better alternative this weekend. Brian Tallerico-HollywoodChicago.com Erased may be earnest, but at its core, it's empty Bill Gibron-Film Racket | |

Sightseers Movie Review
| A British black comedy made in the spirit of "let's run with this demented premise till the tank is empty." Walter V. Addiego-Hearst Newspapers It's just not quite funny enough. Rick Groen-Globe and Mail With a wink and a shrug, Sightseers shows us evil in all its banality. Bruce Demara-Toronto Star A brilliant, deliciously wicked, and thoroughly enjoyable road film ... Tirdad Derakhshani-Philadelphia Inquirer Darkly funny as it is, the movie has undercurrents of genuine and very British weirdness. Ty Burr-Boston Globe The best way to appreciate this briskly paced sick joke is to view its multiple fatalities as especially pointed examples of slapstick. Colin Covert-Minneapolis Star Tribune One of the funniest, and bleakest, comedies of the season. Kelly Vance-East Bay Express What starts out as a sunny, funny getaway soon turns hilariously dark, a fusion of tabloid sensationalism and social satire ... a royal hoot, the funniest British import since 'Shaun of the Dead.' Glenn Lovell-CinemaDope Bloody good camping trip tale James Verniere-Boston Herald It's funny and dark, but it's also unconventionally insightful and full of heart - or at least the hearts that are left beating. Al Alexander-The Patriot Ledger It's the sort of snappy little idea that would probably work better as a short film, but when Wheatley latches onto a concept as big as his talent, I bet we'll be in for something special. Chris Hewitt (St. Paul)-St. Paul Pioneer Press Wheatley playfully bends genres in this romantic-comedy road movie so we never know what might happen next. Rich Cline-Shadows on the Wall Initially funny and imaginative, but increasingly lazy, unfunny and tedious. It would have worked better as a short. Avi Offer-NYC Movie Guru Director Ben Wheatley is capable of simultaneously embracing both the awkward comedy and creeping horror of Chris and Tina's voyage into darkness. Maitland McDonagh-Film Journal International Sightseers homicidal holiday isn't just a pitch-black comedy made with skill, will and brains; it's also another demonstration that Wheatley is, to use an all-too-appropriate phrase, going places. James Rocchi-The Playlist His satirical stab at the traditionally quiet vision of proper England, pointed as much at the monarchy as it is at the Merchant-Ivory generation, is refreshing up to a point and almost always funny, but its sense of agitated hopelessness feels strained. Chris Cabin-Film Racket | |

He's Way More Famous Than You Movie Review
| The farce is so light on its feet that it's buoyant. Sheri Linden-Los Angeles Times Self-pity, self-parody and self-destruction are blurred to cringe-inducing effect in He's Way More Famous Than You. Justin Chang-Variety The screenplay never meshes its ideas into one satirical story or even a series of sketches with individually coherent points. A little meta goes a long, long way. Farran Smith Nehme-New York Post This frenetic movie has moments of wit, and Ms. Feiffer, a seasoned screen and Broadway performer, has range, stamina and charisma. Andy Webster-New York Times Feiffer sometimes gets snagged on the look-at-me nature of her meta-performance, veering from pathological to pathetic, and not always in the best way. Joe Neumaier-New York Daily News A self-referential, insider farce about the hunger for Hollywood stardom, He's Way More Famous Than You is-like its leading lady-as unhinged as it is hilarious. Nick Schager-Village Voice While on some level, He's Way More Famous Than You successfully skewers the cult of celebrity and the entertainment business, it ultimately marginalizes itself from the audience because of the un-likability of the leading character. Christine N. Ziemba-Paste Magazine Anything-goes, loopily autobiographical romp about the travails of a desperate actress it would be a nightmare to encounter in real life. But haven't we all, on some level? David Noh-Film Journal International It would have been nice if the film had surrendered to its lunacy more blatantly, more carelessly. Aftershock Movie Review | |
| This Dimension pickup is a hectic, sometimes hilarious guilty pleasure that should delight genre geeks. Dennis Harvey-Variety Is no continent safe from the blood-drenched paws of filmmaker Eli Roth? Clark Collis-Entertainment Weekly Aftershock's best attribute is the disregard it shows for the safety of its central "heroes" who perish in brutal and generally unexpected ways. Ethan Alter-Hollywood Reporter "Aftershock" is ultimately predictable in its litany of who lives and who dies, and doesn't try to be too ironic or self-reflexive about it. Peter Keough-Boston Globe On the seismic scale of entertainment, "Aftershock" registers a 1.5. Stephen Whitty-Newark Star-Ledger A weird mash-up of disaster, horror and dystopia genre pictures, "Aftershock" fails to make the Earth move. Kyle Smith-New York Post Was Aftershock just an elaborate ruse by writer-producer-star Eli Roth to justify an extended vacation to Chile? Bilge Ebiri-Vulture You just might find yourself rooting for the earthquake to win out in the end. Brian Orndorf-Blu-ray.com Ultimately, Aftershock ends up having the nihilistic outlook of Funny Games with the charming international optimism of Hostel. Kevin Carr-7M Pictures If you're in the midst of such a massive quake, with destruction everywhere, the last thing you should be doing is worrying about escaped murderer-rapist prisoners. Robert Levin-amNewYork If 'The Impossible' was a disaster film for the arthouse, 'Aftershock' is strictly grindhouse. It delivers the nasty goods. John Beifuss-Commercial Appeal (Memphis, TN) Aftershock Is Like Piranha 3D Meets The Impossible Drew Taylor-The Playlist You can only listen to so much screaming and crying before it stops having the desired effect (ratcheting up the viewer's stress level) and simply becomes grating. Marshall Fine-Hollywood & Fine Supposed to be a subversive hybrid of disaster movies and gory horror, but it's uncertain where the two actually meet. Jeffrey M. Anderson-Common Sense Media | |

Peeples Movie Review | |
| Saves itself from a complete belly flop by its good-natured charm. Laremy Legel-Film.com Writer-director Tina Gordon Chism implies that people should accept each other for who they are, but with no genuine insight to back up this moral, it feels hollow. Ben Sachs-Chicago Reader The slapstick is often clunky, but Robinson has a sweet jester's disposition that keeps many of the gags from collapsing. Peter Rainer-Christian Science Monitor It's often rote and by-the-numbers, but writer-director Tina Gordon Chism injects the proceedings with enough smart chat, clever situations and spot-on casting choices to make this well-traveled road feel a little less stale. Alonso Duralde-The Wrap A meet-the-parents-and-their-rigid-disapproval comedy, with a bit of fish-out-of-water humor tossed in. Connie Ogle-Miami Herald Even the bouncy score sounds like it was lifted from an old Three's Company episode; that is when they're not all belting out a song about where it's not cool to pee. Linda Barnard-Toronto Star How did they convince Kerry Washington to be in this mess? Talk about a scandal! Jackie K. Cooper-jackiekcooper.com [Writer/director Tina Gordon Chism is ] good at low-key, observational humor, and the all-around excellent cast swings with aplomb from silly to sweet. Kimberley Jones-Austin Chronicle The arch and resolution are some indication of how utterly lifeless Peeples is, both in the sense of lacking vitality and having no real connection to how people think, feel and react to situations. David Berry-National Post Let's be honest -- harmless it may be, but bad it most certainly is. Ken Hanke-Mountain Xpress (Asheville, NC) No one looks more lost in the movie than Washington, its biggest right-this-moment star. Michael Smith-Tulsa World Formulaically funny, utterly familiar, fish-out-of-water story with a few absurdly engaging comedic touches. Susan Granger-SSG Syndicate A Tyler Perry in producer-name only, 'Peeples' is an uneven comedy with a few laughs and no surprises. Linda Cook-Quad City Times (Davenport, IA) Craig Robinson deserves better. So do Kerry Washington, David Alan Grier, and everyone else who stands before the camera in this clunker. Mike McGranaghan-Aisle Seat Funny but formulaic comedy has some edgy content. S. Jhoanna Robledo-Common Sense Media Pleasant, if inane - helped along by a likable cast that's clearly having fun. Bilge Ebiri-Vulture Better than pretty much everything else associated with Tyler Perry, but that's still not saying much. A talented cast is wasted. Chris Bumbray-JoBlo's Movie Emporium Surely it would have been easier to shoot in Perry's home base of Atlanta, but the significant New England location places the movie at the geographical heart of America's origin story... John Beifuss-Commercial Appeal (Memphis, TN) Passably endearing despite its sometimes pronounced shortcomings. Jason Buchanan-TV Guide's Movie Guide Given the quality of the cast,...this highly uneven, ill-constructed comedy is a disappointment. Frank Swietek-One Guy's Opinion Robinson and Washington make a likable couple, and it's nice to see her playing comedy for a change. Leonard Maltin-Leonard Maltin's Picks In a comedic rite of passage-meeting the folks-complicated by class barriers, Craig Robinson flails around in Peeples. Sometimes it produces laughs. Marsha McCreadie-Film Journal International Has promise and a few talented comedians in its cast to make the material ring bells of hilarity, yet it's burdened by a filmmaker who's not seasoned enough to ride waves of absurdity. Brian Orndorf-Blu-ray.com | |

The Great Gatsby Movie Review
| There are no two ways about it: The Great Gatsby is misconceived and misjudged, a crude burlesque on what's probably American literature's most precious jewel. Tom Charity-CNN.com The central problem with Luhrmann's film is that when it's entertaining it's not Gatsby, and when it's Gatsby it's not entertaining. Christopher Orr-The Atlantic The best attempt yet to capture the essence of the novel. Richard Roeper-Richard Roeper.com A failure that should have at least been a magnificent mistake. Connie Ogle-Miami Herald "The Great Gatsby" is a cool movie, in both the positive and negative sense. You may certainly be impressed, but you may not be moved. Tom Long-Detroit News It's a terrific adaptation that succeeds not only as a work of cinema but also, wonderfully, as proof of the novel's greatness. Rick Groen-Globe and Mail It's cinematic gluttony and Baz Luhrmann does it incredibly well, but like the attendees of one of Gatsby's shindigs, you'll have a fun time but not remember much the next day Cameron Williams-The Popcorn Junkie Like Gatsby himself, it comes so close to achieving its dream, only to fall agonisingly and frustratingly short. Matt Neal-The Standard It may sound like a strange comparison, but the film that Gatsby reminded me of the most is Oliver Stone's Natural Born Killers. Adam Ross-The Aristocrat The Great Gatsby is so close to being a great film, let down by its own refusal to exist in the moment. Thomas Caldwell-Cinema Autopsy No one should feel profoundly disappointed that Luhrmann has shed the author's incisive social commentary in favour of a melange of garishness because he hasn't, as almost all of the film's idiosyncrasies are perfectly pitched. Gareth Simms-Platform Feels warm, extra-terrestrial, and impossible... Whether one thinks it a folly or not, we'll never see another Great Gatsby like the one Baz Luhrmann has magicked up. Simon Miraudo-Quickflix Luhrmann's "Gatsby" is made with enough passion and vision to liberate it from its revered source material - no small feat. Jon Frosch-France24 Baz Luhrmann's Gatsby is a tale of two halves: unremarkable in the first and unexpected in the second. Tom Glasson-Concrete Playground Luhrmann understands Fitzgerald's book and brings the writer's classic prose to life on cinematic terms that feel thrilling, visceral and immediate. Cara Nash-FILMINK (Australia) Luhrmann's take on perhaps the original American #RichPeopleProblems novel -- about misplaced male ambition and romantic longing, and the perils of female drivers -- is a work of fizzy, surface decadence. Brent Simon-Shared Darkness Luhrmann basically invites us to the world's greatest party, but it's one that slowly sours over the course of the following two hours. Matt Looker-TheShiznit.co.uk Less is not more, more is more. Luhrmann's Great Gatsby embraces this notion as a reflection of its central character, and in this sense at least it is near-on perfect. Chris Laverty-Clothes on Film Luhrmann's greatest trick in "The Great Gatsby" is using the romantic plot - will Daisy choose Jay or Tom - as camouflage to get across Fitzgerald's withering and timely portrait of a society dancing to the edge of disaster. Sean Means-Salt Lake Tribune All the CGI-assisted, 3-D sparkle is a wonder to behold, and for a short time it effectively distracts from the inert drama underneath. Corey Hall-Metro Times (Detroit, MI) Luhrmann understandably wants his Gatsby to be great, but he has inadvertently reminded us that the Great American Novel belongs precisely where it was born: on the page. Ed Gibbs-The Age (Australia) Luhrmann makes the most out of what might be considered the text's music video counterpart. Rob Humanick-Projection Booth Baz Luhrmann gives the movie just the right amount of Baz-amatazz! Jackie K. Cooper-jackiekcooper.com Nick's voice in the novel is a dry, cutting counterpoint; the movie subordinates his irony to his angst and his boyish admiration for Gatsby. Margot Harrison-Seven Days Luhrmann and his design/vision soulmate Catherine Martin package all this in oversize gift boxes all superbly ribboned and bowed, but we have to accept that the presents inside are just as valuable and meaningful Andrew L. Urban-Urban Cinefile There's a pulsating hyper reality about the film in which everything is zinging ... emotional cred is wanting but Luhrman's Gatsby overall delivers a feast that is more than enough to satisfy and enthrall Louise Keller-Urban Cinefile | |

One Track Heart: The Story of Krishna Das Movie Review
| Insights are few in this fan letter of a documentary. Sheri Linden-Los Angeles Times An engaging look at the era of enlightenment-seeking when young, shaggy-haired Americans experimented with LSD and traveled to India seeking answers. Loren King-Boston Globe Jeremy Frindel's workmanlike docu proceeds in a matter-of-fact manner that neither ignores nor belabors the inspirational aspect of its story. Ronnie Scheib-Variety Despite its spiritual subject matter, this documentary doesn't dig very deep. Frank Scheck-Hollywood Reporter A fine enough documentary, a nice enough introduction to a charismatic figure with a fascinating life, an unusual art and worldwide fans. David DeWitt-New York Times Frindel can't rescue Kagel from marginalization as a New Agey preacher man, but he does portray this hippest of all Krishnas as someone who deeply believes in the self-sacrificing mantra he chants ... Araceli Cruz-Village Voice A mildly engaging introduction to Krishna Das. Avi Offer-NYC Movie Guru Worshipful documentary about rocker turned guru Krishna Das will basically appeal to the already-and very, very happily so-converted. David Noh-Film Journal International The overall product doesn't reveal anything about its subject that a Wikipedia page couldn't do just as well. Drew Hunt-Slant Magazine | |
